Singapore officially the Republic of Singapore, sometimes referred to as the Lion City, the Garden City or the Little Red Dot, is a sovereign city-state in Southeast Asia. It lies one degree (137 km) north of the equator, at the southern tip of peninsular Malaysia, with Indonesia's Riau Islands to the south. Singapore's territory consists of one main island along with 62 other islets. Since independence, extensive land reclamation has increased its total size by 23% (130 km2), and its greening policy has covered the densely populated island with tropical flora, parks and gardens. A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR: "Orang minyak" literally means "oily man" in Malay and refers to a local evil being who covers himself in black oil and goes around burgling homes and raping virgins. Some people believe the orang minyak is a creature of black magic and that he needs to rape virgins in order to maintain his powers, which include being invisible to a vast majority of people. Others believe the orang minyak is nothing more than a petty criminal and that his oily coat is to help him slip away from his potential captors, literally. Download Free Android App of "Smart Learning for All" @ https://goo.gl/ZvPxzt Pythagorean Theorem. In Pythagorean theorem triangle should be right angled. Longest side of triangle is opposite to the 90 degree angle. It is called the hypotenuse. By Pythogorean theorem, AB square plus BC square is equal to AC square. Substituting AB is equal to 3 and BC is equal to 4. AC square is equal to 3 square plus 4 square. AC square is equal to 9 plus 16. AC square is equal to 25. Therefore, AC is equal to 5. Hence, length of AC is equal to 5 metres. Subscribe to our YouTube channel: Smart Learning for All.

With the RSPO, WWF developed a set of international standards for responsible palm oil production. Producers that show they meet these criteria are able to sell certified sustainable palm oil. That means companies that use it in their lipstick, soap, margarine or whatever else can make the same guarantee to their customers. Certified sustainable palm oil cannot be grown in place of primary forest or in important conservation areas. Growers have to use the best growing practices to keep soil and water supplies healthy, and to reduce pollution and carbon emissions. They also need to pay a decent wage and respect the rights of workers and communities. The first certified sustainable palm oil came on to the market in September 2008. Today, about 6.4% of all palm oil is certified sustainable. By looking out for CSPO, the label for sustainable palm oill, you'll be able to buy these products safe in the knowledge that you're not contributing to the destruction of the rainforests. RID 3108

The country is highly urbanised with very little primary rainforest remaining, although more land is being created for development through land reclamation. Part of various local empires since being inhabited in the second century AD, modern Singapore was founded by Sir Stamford Raffles as a trading post of the East India Company in 1819 with the permission from the Johor Sultanate. The British obtained sovereignty over the island in 1824 and Singapore became one of the British Straits Settlements in 1826. Occupied by the Japanese during World War II, Singapore declared independence from the United Kingdom, uniting with other former British territories to form Malaysia in 1963, although it was separated from Malaysia two years later. Since then, it has had a massive increase in wealth, and is one of the Four Asian Tigers. Singapore is the world's fourth-leading financial centre, and its port is one of the five busiest ports in the world. The economy depends heavily on exports and refining imported goods, especially in manufacturing, which constituted 26% of Singapore's GDP in 2005. In terms of purchasing power parity, Singapore has the third-highest per capita income in the world. Singapore is a unitary multiparty parliamentary republic with a Westminster system of unicameral parliamentary government. The People's Action Party has won every election since self-government in 1959. Slightly over five million people live in Singapore, of which 2.91 million were born locally. The population is highly diverse; the majority are Chinese with almost 75% of the total population, while Malays and Indians forming significant minorities. Reflecting this diversity, the country has four official languages: English, Malay, Chinese, and Tamil. One of the five founding members of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), the country is also the host of the APEC Secretariat, and a member of the East Asia Summit, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Commonwealth. Singapore is a world leader in several economic areas: The country is the world's fourth leading financial centre, the world's second-biggest casino gambling market, one of the world's top three oil-refining centres, the world's largest oil-rig producer, and a major ship-repairer.The port is one of the five busiest ports in the world. The World Bank has named Singapore as the easiest place in the world to do business and ranks Singapore the world's top logistics hub. It is also the world's fourth largest foreign-exchange trading centre after London, New York and Tokyo. As a result of the early 2000s recession and a slump in the technology sector, Singapore's GDP contracted by 2.2% in 2001. The Economic Review Committee was set up in December 2001 and recommended several policy changes to revitalise the economy. Singapore has since recovered, due largely to improvements in the world economy; the economy grew by 8.3% in 2004, 6.4% in 2005, and 7.9% in 2006. After a contraction of 0.8% in 2009, the economy recovered in 2010, with GDP growth of 14.5%. Most work in Singapore is in the service sector, which employed 2,151,400 people out of 3,102,500 jobs in December 2010. The percentage of unemployed economically active people above age 15 is about 2%

Many Malaysians wonder if there is a place for them back home, especially when it comes to the potential of career growth. We spoke to three successful Malaysians on why they chose to return to Malaysia when they were at the peak of their international careers. Dr. Sundari Ampikaipakan, a Consultant Chest Physician with Pantai Holdings Berhad made the decision to come back after being abroad for 20 years. Antony Lee, CEO of AIG Insurance Malaysia Berhad returned for both personal and professional reasons. Datuk Iain Lo, Chairman of Shell Malaysia wanted to give back to the country. "When the opportunity came up [to return to Malaysia]," he said, "I just grabbed it with both hands." TalentCorp's Returning Expert Programme (REP) was introduced to encourage Malaysians abroad with expertise in selected priority sectors, to return and work in Malaysia to contribute skill sets and experiences towards the development of the country. Returning Malaysians are recognised as catalysts in our country's transforming workforce, creating new opportunities all around for employers and high-skilled talent in Malaysia. Welcome to my travelchannel. On my channel you can find almost 1000 films of more than 70 countries. See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/user/nurettinodunya/playlists Singapore: Singapore officially the Republic of Singapore, is the world's only sovereign city-state that is also an island country. It is located in Southeast Asia, off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and 137 kilometres (85 mi) north of the equator. Made up of the lozenge-shaped main island (widely known as Singapore Island but also known as Pulau Ujong, its native Malay name) and over 60 much smaller islets, it is separated from Peninsular Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south. Stamford Raffles founded colonial Singapore in 1819 as a trading post of the East India Company; after its collapse and the eventual establishment of the British Raj, the islands were ceded to Britain and became part of its Straits Settlements in 1826. During the Second World War, Singapore was occupied by Japan. It gained independence from the UK in 1963 by federating with other former British territories to form Malaysia, but separated two years later over ideological differences, becoming a sovereign nation in 1965. After early years of turbulence, and despite lacking natural resources and a hinterland, the nation developed rapidly as an Asian Tiger economy, based on external trade and its workforce. Singapore is a global commerce, finance and transport hub. Its standings include: the most "technology-ready" nation (WEF), top International-meetings city (UIA), city with "best investment potential" (BERI), second-most competitive country, third-largest foreign exchange market, third-largest financial centre, third-largest oil refining and trading centre, and the second-busiest container port. The country has also been identified as a tax haven. Singapore ranks 5th on the UN Human Development Index and the 3rd highest GDP per capita. It is ranked highly in education, healthcare, life expectancy, quality of life, personal safety, and housing. Although income inequality is high, 90% of homes are owner-occupied. 38% of Singapore's 5.6 million residents are permanent residents and other foreign nationals. There are four official languages: English (common and first language), Malay, Mandarin, Tamil; almost all Singaporeans are bilingual. Singapore is a unitary multiparty parliamentary republic, with a Westminster system of unicameral parliamentary government. The People's Action Party has won every election since self-government in 1959. The dominance of the PAP, coupled with a low level of press freedom and restrictions on civil liberties and political rights, has led to Singapore being classified by some as a semi-authoritarian regime. One of the five founding members of the ASEAN, Singapore is also the host of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Secretariat, and a member of the East Asia Summit, Non-Aligned Movement, and the Commonwealth of Nations. singapore then and now photos old singapore places remember singapore wordpress old singapore photo gallery singapore old photos archive singapore old and new pictures singapore 1950s photos singapore in the past and present history of singapore summary singapore history timeline singapore history facts history of singapore before 1819 history of singapore singapore history life in colonial singapore singapore british colony Singapore History

When award-winning filmmakers, Tan Chui Mui and Liew Seng Tat, along with actor-producers Chua Thien See and Foo Fei Ling, approached me to make a short film about the issues surrounding an Australian rare earth refinery in Gebeng, on the east coast of Malaysia, I knew nothing about rare earth or the fact that Mitsubishi operated such a refinery in Malaysia back in the 80's, closed it down in 1992 and has been cleaning up the radioactive waste since then. The more I read about the complexities and dangers of refining rare earth (because they are found in nature alongside radioactive substances like thorium and uranium), the more befuddled I was that Malaysia would welcome an Australian company with no previous experience in rare earth mining or processing to open a refinery in Gebeng; 700,000 people live in villages and towns within a 30-km radius of the proposed refinery site. The company wasn't even going to mine the rare earth minerals here. They were going to dig them up from somewhere in the Australian desert, ship the ore (which includes radioactive substances) over to Malaysia, refine them and ship the pure rare earth metals back to Australia, leaving the radioactive waste in Malaysia. Even more bizarre was the fact that our government had granted this foreign company a 12-year tax holiday in return for creating 350 jobs in the town. When the people of the affected town began protesting against the proposed refinery, other Malaysians, like myself, remained either ignorant or indifferent towards their plight. Of course, I'm simplifying the events and circumstances and I only relate them here purely as background information. In any case, I got thinking about our government, whom we elect every 5 years or so. I thought about the Australian company. I thought about the inhabitants of Gebeng and its surrounding villages and towns. I thought about apathetic me. Then I thought of the Orang Minyak. The evil creature with magical powers which have to be renewed regularly. The petty thief and rapist who gets away with his crimes because most of us are blind to his misdeeds. I thought about the virgins who can see him and how they must look to non-virgins who can't. These other people must think them paranoid and probably wouldn't come to their rescue if they screamed for help. And I suddenly saw the short film I was going to make. And you can see it again by clicking REPLAY :-) For more information on the rare earth refinery issue, you might wish to read the New York Times articles: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/09/business/energy-environment/09rareside.html http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/09/business/energy-environment/09rare.html?_r=1 http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/30/business/global/30rare.html?pagewanted=all Thanks for watching. Have a good laugh. Things get really hilarious next week with our final (and longest) film - Liew Seng Tat's "Welcome to Kampong Radioaktif"! Be sure to catch it. In the meantime, do check out or re-watch our two previous shorts (Woo Ming Jin's "Masakan Cinta"/"Love Dish" and Tan Chui Mui's "Cinta Lai Kwan"/"Lai Kwan's Love") as well as our series of 3 teasers featuring the fictional reporter Lee Ah Seng here on our YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/kampongradioaktif Hope you enjoy the films! joon han
